Preparing your belongings for long-term storage solutions

If you are going to be taking advantage of modern storage solutions for an extended amount of time, you’ll want to be sure that all of your prized possessions are packed up to be safe, secure, and exactly the way you left them when you place them into storage in the first place.

A lot of folks are under the impression that they can simply box things up and stuff them into modern-day storage solutions, but nothing could be further from the truth. A lot of how you prepare and how you pack your possessions will have to do with the type of long-term storage solutions you are choosing, which is why this quick guide was created in the first place.

Find storage you know you can trust

Right out of the gate, you have to be 100% certain that the storage organizations you are working with is going to be able to provide you with a facility that is:

• Safe
• Secure
• Protected from the elements
• Easy enough to access on your terms

It’s not a bad idea to find storage facilities that also offer climate controlled technology, dehumidification/humidification technology, and active security solutions – including actual security guards – to give you an extra layer of confidence.

Obviously, you’ll pay a little bit extra for these kinds of security and storage solutions, but they often are well worth the extra expense.

Wrap EVERYTHING in plastic before packing it away

It’s always a good idea to wrap everything that can be wrapped in plastic before you pack it away, if only to provide an extra layer of protection against dust, dirt, debris, and potential water damage that you cannot foresee or expect.

Some folks try and get away with wrapping their boxes in plastic after they have packed them up, and while that is certainly better than nothing, it’s not a bad idea to individually wrap your possessions in plastic if you have the time in the budget to do so.

Use the heaviest duty boxes you can afford

There is a world of difference between the lightweight boxes you can usually get for free at a local corner shop or grocery and the heavy duty boxes you can invest in from companies that are in the storage solutions and moving industries.

Invest in heavy-duty boxes and you’ll be able to rest easy knowing that your possessions are safer and better protected than they would have been with flimsy cardboard standing between them and the elements.
