The moving process is not complete when the movers have left and you have unpacked. There are a few stages that cannot be completed until you are in your new home and ready to settle in. Here is a quick run-down of what needs to be done immediately following the move and in the following days.
Check you appliances and electronics
Whilst the utmost care will be taken by the removals company, it is important to check all of your electrical equipment to ensure that there was no damage caused in transit. There is only a limited time to make a claim with your insurance company, so carry out these checks as soon as possible.
Updating your information
Take a meter reading of your gas, electricity and water as soon as you can. This information will need to be passed on to the relevant energy and water companies. Whether you are continuing with the same companies you were with previously, or have found a better deal elsewhere; this is something that needs to be done sooner rather than later as your bills will be based on the meter information.
You will need to contact your bank, employer, local council and DVLA (if you drive) to provide your new address. You could also contact the post office to have any mail forwarded to your new address so that you don’t miss important correspondence. Other companies that should be updated include your mobile phone company, any insurance providers and vet.
Help your children settle in
Registering your children to your school of choice should be done as soon as possible. The same can be said for your local doctors surgery and dentist. Establishing a routine for your children as soon as possible will help them settle in to their new home and lifestyle quickly.
Help them to unpack their belongings and arrange their room how they want within reason. This will give them a sense of belonging and control over the move, as well as creating excitement about the process.
